How To Get Rid Of Soap Scum
You may not have seen through your shower screen for years thanks to that filmy soap scum that can be extremely tough to remove.
Unfortunately, the longer you put it off, the more stubborn it becomes. Those murky marks don't have to be a permanent fixture.
In fact, you can have your screen shining like new using one natural ingredient. Baking Soda.
What Causes Soap Scum?
When the minerals found in hard water combine with the paraffin wax used in bar soap, it creates the layer of scum so often seen in bathrooms.
How To Remove Soap Scum off Your Shower Screen
We recommend using baking soda here because it is an abrasive mild alkaline that, when combined with water, dissolves dirt and grease effectively.
Step 1 Make Your Cleaning Solution
Mix 1/2 cup of baking soda, 1 small squirt of dishwashing detergent and 1 cup of water to form a slightly runny paste, similar to cake batter consistency. Experiment a little to make sure you get the consistency just right.
Step 2 Apply Your Cleaning Solution
Apply the solution to the soap scum using a soft brush and let the solution sit for about 20 minutes.
Step 3 Scrub, Rinse and Wipe
Scrub with the brush and rinse off with warm water. Wipe down completely with a soft towel or dry microfibre cloth. You may need to use a paper towel to ensure there are no streaks.
And that's it!
Apply to your grout lines and let it sit for 20 minutes, just like your shower screen. Scrub with an old toothbrush and wipe off. Keep in mind you may need to give your floors a mop with your usual tile cleaner afterwards as the baking soda can make the floors a little gritty.
How Do You Prevent Soap Scum?
There are a few things you can do to prevent soap scum from reforming. Some of these tips will also keep soap scum away from your bathtub.
A daily shower clean on your screen will stop soap scum from building up. Wipe the screen down with a dry rag or squeegee after your shower. You could also stop using your bar soap and start using liquid soap instead to keep soap scum at bay.
